I have always enjoyed the challenge of night photography. Today with modern digital cameras and computer processing the potentials are even greater than ever before. For much of my life, I have lived in a location with dark skies free of human light pollution , where I can sit on my porch and stare at the Milky Way in wonder. Oh, how small we are, like a grain of sand on a vast beach. My current home along the Maine coast near Acadia National Park is one such location. We have bragging rights to having some of the clearest night skies on the east coast of the United States, where we can see far more stars and celestial objects, such as satellites, meteors and comets.

This is a favorite shot of me during the 2012 Acadia Night Sky Festival where I represented the Park Service as a Ranger, assisting with Bob Thayer's Night Sky Photography Workshop. Notice how the tiny L.E.D. on my camera illuminates my face and the ground around me. Any stray light can affect a long exposure night photograph.
